Cooking for one can be a very fun way to cook. While I am a person who does not eat the same way as the rest of my family, many times I prepare a different meal for myself that does not contain the things that my family is eating. After being involved with this habit for so long, I have quite a few recipes and ideas that are centered around creating only a single serving. If you are new to the idea of cooking for one, don't despair it is much easier than you might think.
When Cooking For One Pre-Planning And A Stocked Pantry Make The Task Much Easier
A well-stocked pantry provides a solid foundation in which to create delicious dinners for one person. You can purchase whole-wheat four cheese ravioli in the large container and freeze it in individual servings. On a night when dinner is in a rush, take out a serving for one size dinner portion, cooking it according to the package directions and then covering with a favorite canned spaghetti sauce makes a quick meal in only minutes. Serve it with a salad on the side and dinner is done.
The New Packaging Seems To Be Designed With Only One Thing In Mind, Cooking For One
Recently, businesses are gaining in awareness of the trend for families to purchase frozen goods in bulk and prepare them as the need arises. This is particularly the case for fish and chicken companies. These days you can buy a large bag of frozen fish or chicken that contains individually wrapped packages. This is a great benefit to the single person who is often cooking for one. Buying individually frozen meats, bulk packaged, allows for someone who is cooking for one to still enjoy the reduced cost of buying foods in bulk that stay fresher longer.
When Cooking For One, There Are Kitchen Utensils And Cookware That Focus On This Concept
As a person that cooks for only one meal at a time, I find that I need items that are designed for smaller portions. I found the perfect single size stoneware baking pan that holds the exact amount of vegetables for roasting, a fish fillet or beef steak or a baking potato on a recent shopping adventure. This piece of stoneware has become invaluable to me. It is the perfect size for cooking one serving and still fits in the oven with the traditional size cookware that I use for my family, so I can cook both sets of meals at the same time.

Soda Water Made Simple
Soda water is water that has been carbonated -- that is, carbon dioxide gas has been added to it; sometimes it is referred to as sparkling water. It is the principal ingredient of most "soft drinks" and "pop.". The carbonation process forms carbonic acid, which is soda pop.
By using a seltzer bottle filled with water and then “charged” with carbon dioxide, soda water (also called club soda) can be produced right at home. Although it is possible for small amounts of table salts and sodium trace minerals to be present, club soda can be the same as plain carbonated water. Such additives make the taste of home made soda water slightly salty. Carbonated mineral water often results from the process, which occurs naturally in many areas.
A little dental decay may sometimes be caused by sparkling mineral water. The potential problem of sparkling water is slightly greater than "still" water, but the problem remains low. Tooth decay occurs at a much higher rate for users of regular soft drinks versus users of sparkling water. The rate is so low it suggests that carbonation may not be a factor in causing dental decay.
Artesian wells are often the source for water that filters among layers of minerals containing forms of carbonates, absorbing the carbon dioxide gas released by those carbonates. What's it called? Natural sparkling water. Sparkling mineral water results in cases where the filtered water picks up enough different minerals to add a flavor.
Soda water is not complicated; it's just water and carbon dioxide. Sparkling mineral water seems very special, but it is just a natural product of carbonation. A notable date in soda water history is 1794, when a jeweler made a device to produce artificial carbonated mineral water.
A taste test of several popular carbonated drinks determined that Perrier (a sparkling natural mineral water) kept its fizz the longest.
The gentle fizz of club soda may be a welcome alternative for consumers who feel seltzer to be a bit harsh. Club soda seemed to be milder, and a little sweeter, than the standard carbonated water during the taste test,.
Club soda, sparkling mineral water, seltzer, and carbonated water have a great advantage over soda pop and tonic water -- no calories.
If one mixes water, sugar, carbon dioxide and quinine, the carbonated result is called tonic water. Originally, to help cure or prevent malaria, quinine was added to tonic water. Today it is often used as a mixer with gin and lemon or lime for an alcoholic drink.
These basic facts and terms help us have a clearer understanding of soda water.

Ice cream flavours you never thought of.
Morelli's ice cream parlour at Harrods in London is famous around the world for it's innovative and creative ice creams.
Gino Soldan has worked there for 18 years and is absolutely passionate about ice cream. However he rarely gives interviews to the press so it was something of a coup to get him to agree to talk about his work.
The following quotes come from the excellent ice-cream-recipes blog.
Gino believes that ice cream is not just a dessert and explained how he was already experimenting with unusual ice cream flavors several years ago. He produced a number of new ice creams combining savoury and sweet flavors which proved very popular. These included:
Pear ice cream with Gorgonzola
parmesan and honey ice cream
feta cheese and yellow pepper cream - to be served with a grilled vegetable platter
olive ice cream - to be served with a cheese platter
tomato sorbet - to be served with gazpacho soup
Gino then prepared a number of new flavours to reflect a typically British menu. Flavours one doesn't usually associate with ice cream.
Yorkshire Pudding Ice Cream
Sausage and Mash Ice Cream
Pork Pie Ice Cream
Cheddar Cheese Ice Cream
Cornish Pasty Ice Cream
Clotted Cream Ice Cream
Lancashire Hotpot flavoured ice cream
Eccles Cake Ice Cream
Worcestershire Sauce Ice Cream
Haggis Ice Cream
Shortbread Ice Cream
Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps Ice Cream
Black pudding flavoured ice cream
Stottie Cake Ice Cream
Haslet Ice Cream
Red Leicester Cheese Ice Cream
Wensleydale Cheese Ice Cream
Arbroath Smokie Ice Cream
Welsh Rarebit Ice Cream
Kendal Mint Cake Ice Cream
You can read the full article on the ice cream recipes blog.
Once in Harrods there is so much more to see and do than enjoying the pleasures of Gino's ice cream creations. Harrods has over 1 million square feet of selling space and over 330 departments. So that should allow plenty of opportunity for window shopping :-)

Dinner Shortcuts: Quick Tips for Getting a Healthy Dinner on the Table
If you think you don't have time to make dinner, think again. Use these ideas and you'll be whipping up dinner in no time.
Plan your meals in advance.
Nothing has people reaching for the take out menu faster than a lack of planning. If you've been trying to plan dinner after 5 pm, odds are that you give up on cooking most days. Make sure to plan at least five meals each week before you go to the grocery store for the week, so you have the ingredients on hand. (Printable grocery coupons are here.) If you have enough food to make several different types of meals, you'll be less likely to eat out.
Each morning, decide what you'll make for dinner that night. At this time, you may decide to put any meat that needs to defrost in the refrigerator, and double check that you have all of the ingredients. Take a quick look at the recipe to determine what you'll need to start first so everything is done at the same time.
Come up with a system for dinner recipes.
Quick dinners are easy when you have a system to follow. Keep it simple. Your dinners can be protein, carbohydrate, plus veggie. This formula can cover a wide range of possibilities – baked chicken, cheesy noodles and broccoli, grilled steak with peppers and onions served with tortillas, sautéed ground beef with Asian vegetables served over rice. The possibilities are endless!
Use frozen vegetables to save time.
Everyone needs more vegetables and serving frozen vegetables are an easy way to get more into your family's diet. Keep a wide variety of frozen vegetables on hand. You can change the flavor with spices, margarine mixed with lemon juice or even Italian dressing. A few minutes in the microwave or on the stovetop with a vegetable steamer and you'll have vegetables for your meal.
Cook some ingredients ahead of time.
Ground beef can be used in many different recipes, from spaghetti to tacos. It takes just as much time to brown two pounds of beef as it does to brown a half a pound. On a weekend, brown and freeze several pounds of ground beef or ground turkey. This way, the next time you cook a recipe that calls for ground beef you'll just have to reheat it. You can do the same thing with chicken pieces.
Keep backups on hand.
Even the most well planned menu can come undone from time to time. Keep a few frozen meals at the ready. Frozen lasagna, skillet meals and other pre-packaged foods are okay every once in a while. You can improve the nutrition of these processed meals by adding more vegetables and serving health side dishes.
For those special occasion meals when you need gourmet fare, consider a service that delivers prepared meals or gourmet entrees to your home (such as Home Bistro or Omaha Steaks). This option can get expensive if you use it a lot, but both companies issue online coupons and promotions from time to time. Check here for current Home Bistro Coupons; and here for Omaha Steaks coupons.

How to Use and Cook Cheap Food
We all want to stretch our grocery budget as far as it can go but sometimes wonder just when we can choose or use Budget Cooking ; are those store brands or other items just as good as national brands? Do they taste as good and if not, what can we do to fix that?
There are some things to remember when talking about cheap food that you can buy for your family and you would do well to consider these things since you of course don't want to sacrifice your family's health or have meals that no one enjoys eating. But there are many brands and varieties of cheap food that often do just as well as the national brands or the more expensive varieties, and using these when you can is always a good idea.
You might immediately realize some cheap food substitutes and may already be using them. The store brand cereal is much more cost-efficient than the national brand and rarely can anyone taste a difference.Name Brands are so expensive but there sometimes are good options for dairy, meats, and product that is at a price thats much easier on your budget. And really, as long as they're not expired, what difference is there between two cartons of milk or two chickens? So the store brand is a great way to get cheap food substitutes for so many items that you use every single day. This can also include condiments such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and salad dressing, or staples such as flour, rice, or oatmeal.Always remember that you can get very good store brands for a lot less than the comparible national brands.
But others ways of incorporating Low Price Cooking into your family's meals is by using less expensive cuts of meat in different dishes, such as using chicken for pot pies or soups rather than beef, or having less expensive cuts of steak when you want to treat yourself. There are many things you can use to dress up cheap food such as marinade mixes or spice blends; if you marinate a cheaper cut of meat overnight it usually comes out just as tasty as the more expensive cuts. You might not really want to learn how to cook or learn how to make these items but if you do you may find that being able to use these cheaper cuts of meat on a regular basis really helps your grocery bill overall.
Another way to incorporate Budget Cooking into your family's meals is to use more vegetables or pasta and less meat for certain dishes. When making chili, omit the beef and add zucchini or more onion and beans. Make spaghetti with a tomato sauce and omit the meatballs. Have a vegetable soup or vegetable stew and make biscuits to go with it.You really may not miss the chicken or beef if you just try to serve a vegetable stir fry that is over noodles. By doing this you'll see that sometimes cheap food doesn't always need to mean boring or bland food.

Low Cost Cooking Recipes and how to Dress them Up
Everyone needs to watch their spending today; even someone making six figures is going to feel the pinch of gas prices and food prices that are skyrocketing out of control these days. But while there seems to be no end to the number of Low Price Cooking recipes that you can use to cut back on your family's grocery bill, very often these recipes leave something to be desired when it comes to their nutritional value and their taste. Really, what's the point of following cheap food recipes if it means food that is unhealthy or that no one in your family will eat? But there are some ways to dress up these recipes so that they're tastier and more nutritious at the same time.
For one thing remember that you can use foods that are reduced in fat and sugar but not necessarily fat free or sugar free. Usually things like mayonnaise or salad dressing that are fat free are rather tasteless but you can use reduced fat items in Low Cost Cooking recipes that will make them healthier but still preserve the taste. Think of how you can use reduced fat cheese, mayonnaise, salad dressing, yogurt, cottage cheese, cream cheese, and items like these in any cheap food recipes you may have to make them better for you.
Chicken or pork is better to use than beef as it is a leaner meat and healthier for you. Shredded chicken marinating in barbecue sauce makes for great sandwiches, or you can use chicken strips for rolled up sandwiches instead of steak. Thinking of how you can make up cheap food recipes using less expensive cuts of meat this way can save you quite a bit over time.
You might also want to think of items you can add to your Low Cost Cooking recipes to enhance flavor. For example, salsa, spaghetti sauce, reduced fat cheese, or sour cream can be used in many casserole recipes without adding a lot of extra calories. If you're making chicken and rice, add some cheese or sour cream and bake it for added flavor. Leftover meatballs can be added to pasta sauce for a nice submarine sandwich. These types of cheap food recipes use up leftovers so that you're not adding anything to your grocery bill.Sometimes we forget and just warm up a plate of leftovers but think of what you have in your fridge that you can add to help with the flavor of those leftovers.
A good rule of thumb is to add fresh veggies to any food recipe you are making to add flavor and bulk.Sometimes you can really stretch your casserole by adding more broccoli and cauliflower to that chicken dish. You really can have a well balanced meal even with a meat dish as you can steam fresh veggies as a side dish. These make for cheap food recipes that are better for you. You can even use pasta sauce over steamed vegetables as well for added flavor. By doing so you'll have cheap food recipes that are healthy and budget friendly.

Cooking Cheap and How to Cook Cheap
When you are thinking about how to save money, its really hard to think about how you start saving money. Cutting back on your grocery bill is only going to happen if you have some concrete and realistic Low Cost Cooking ideas as to what to fix for each meal and snack. Sometimes this means following a particular recipe or instructions for a meal, but often cheap food ideas can mean just getting creative and using some common sense for meals.
An example of what we are talking about follows. You can usually find frozen vegetables that are very affordable at your supermarket; many cheap food ideas involve using these in a soup or stew that you make yourself for just pennies. A pan or broth or a few jars of prepared gravy are all you need for a vegetable soup or stew. Its as simple as using your left over veggies and gravy along with a pot pie crust and you have a dinner already made. These are great Budget Cooking ideas that are very filling and that can be done without a lot of fuss or without following a complicated recipe. For a pot pie you simply follow the directions on the pie crust and for soup you can just add a few herbs such as oregano and basil. While canned soup and canned stew are very affordable themselves, by making up your own as cheap food ideas you're saving even more money and usually get a meal that's much tastier than anything you get from a can.
Sometimes its good to think in advance the ways you want to use your leftovers when preparing a meal. You might not think much of those few spoonfuls of mashed potatoes or those few bites of chicken but these can be incorporated into entirely new meals. Mashed potatoes can easily become potato pancakes and any type of leftover meat can be reheated in a small amount of oil to be put over a salad or wrapped up in a rolled sandwich. By using these items until they're actually used up and gone you have cheap food ideas that really only cost a few pennies for the additional ingredients and don't need to purchase a new helping of meat or anything else.
When considering Low Cost Cooking ideas bear in mind the cost of buying prepared and packaged foods as well.A good rule of thumb is that anything that is already prepared for you is also two or three times as expensive as something you prepare yourself. While you may occasionally need to purchase these things for special occasions you should never make a habit of allowing the supermarket to do your cooking for you! You're actually paying for the labor needed to prepare these items which goes against the concept of cheap food ideas.
So keep these things in mind when considering cheap food ideas. Get creative with leftovers and don't let the supermarket do your cooking; this way you're sure to save as much as you can on your grocery bill.

Eating Cheap does not include Fast Food
With everyone's budget being stretched to the limit these days, it's no wonder that many people are turning to the dollar menus and other items they find at those cheap fast food restaurants to help round out their meals. When you have a family to feed it can be tempting to just take everyone to the local hamburger place for burgers and fries and unlimited soda, but if you're concerned at all about your health and your family's health then you may want to reconsider those cheap fast food meals and learn Low Price Cooking , no matter how tight your budget.
It's true that sometimes you can get more food for your money at those cheap fast food restaurants because they are able to buy things in bulk the way that private consumers just can't, even when you shop at those warehouse stores and outlets. So they can offer a lot of items for a dollar or so when it might cost you half over that to make them at home.Cheap Fast food is still fast food and althought its cheap it doesn't mean its the best choice for your family. When considering what you're going to eat and what your family is going to eat there are other things to think about than just the price.Sometimes its good to ask yourself why these restaurants can get such cheap food and its because they get the food with the lowest quality possible. Their hamburger is full of fat rather than a lean cut and most fries are cooked in thick, artery-clogging saturated fat and oils. So you might be eating cheaper food this way but it's not food that does anything for your health overall, and can be damaging as well so its best to learn about Low Price Cooking .
Rather than rely on cheap fast food to fill in the gaps of your grocery budget, it might be time to learn some tips and tricks for feeding your family Budget Cooking . A can of soup usually costs about as much as a hamburger and can be even more filling. It can be even cheaper if you make the soup yourself and usually tastes better as well. Rather than get soda from the vending machine just buy it at the supermarket and bring it into the office; this is usually about a third of the cost of buying it even at a cheap fast food restaurant.Remember, lunch that you bring to eat doesn't always have to be a cold lunch, you can always bring in a plate to warm up of last nights dinner. A microwave at work can mean that you can easily heat the ingredients separately and make the sandwich while you're there so nothing is soggy.
It might take some effort to learn how to forego lunch or dinner at a cheap fast food restaurant all the time, but it's usually worth it in the end.Food with no nutritional value is not worth it no matter how cheap it is and this is what you will usually find at fast food restaurants.

How to make Cheap Family Meals
Your family enjoying cheap easy meals is probably the biggest concern when we start talking meals on a budget! Anyone can boil a piece of broccoli and slap it on a plate and call it dinner, but when we're talking about Low Cost Cooking family meals we're talking about things that your family will actually enjoy and even look forward to.
As an example, you might want to start getting into the habit of saving your leftovers from meals. Anything that's still palatable can be used in a new dish or reheated for something entirely different. Many cheap family meals are done by using up leftovers in new dishes.Remember you can make a pot pie with left over veggies that you have frozen in the fridge. All you need is a frozen pie crust and a jar or two of gravy.Toss a salad while everything is cooking according to the crust directions and you now have a meal. You can also make cheap family meals by getting in the habit of eating soup before your regular meals. Just a small bowlful can help to fill everyone up so that you're eating less meat and potatoes at dinner. A tossed salad also does the trick, and of course these things are very nutritious as well as being affordable.
Pasta is a mainstay for many Low Price Cooking family meals. You can have a vegetable stir fry and serve it over noodles or serve spaghetti with a plain tomato sauce. Casseroles are also a favorite as they are easy to prepare and usually require only a few ingredients. Using creamy soup (cream of broccoli or cream of mushroom) with chicken and rice is a favorite staple for many. Why not try out leftover chicken for this as well! These types of Budget Cooking family meals also mean that you can just make some bread or a side salad for a complete dinner.
Sometimes making cheap family meals just means serving less things and eating less as well. We often make the mistake of thinking that every meal should look like Thanksgiving dinner and wind up have several side dishes as well as dessert every single night. Have your family get used to a meat and one side dish, and maybe some rolls or other bread. Save dessert for Sunday if even then. Sometimes cheap family meals just mean simple family meals. You can even get creative - serve breakfast items like eggs and toast or pancakes for dinner, or sandwich roll-ups. Personal pizzas can be made with some biscuit dough and a small amount toppings; this is much cheaper than ordering a pizza.
So yes, it does take some work and effort to come up with ideas for cheap family meals but it can be done if you're determined. In the long run you may find that these meals are not only nutritious and delicious but are saving your family literally hundreds if not thousands of dollars off your grocery bill each year!

Using Leftovers for Cheap Easy Meals
With rising food prices - and prices for just about everything else on the rise as well - it's no wonder that many people are wondering how to make as many Low Price Cooking easy meals as they possibly can. Of course there are many ways you can trim your grocery bill from buying more items in bulk to clipping coupons and checking store circulars before you shop. All of these methods can cut your grocery bill by a quarter and sometimes even half, but there is another way to make cheap easy meals without all of that fuss. And that's by using leftovers for an entirely new meal or as a basis for a new dish.
Many hesitate to use leftovers because often food that's been refrigerated or frozen just isn't as tasty as something cooked fresh. But usually the best way to use leftovers for cheap easy meals is by using them in the basis of a new dish rather than simply reheating them as is. This might mean that you need to add some additional ingredients or dress them up a bit, but it still means you're saving money by using this food you've already purchased. Now we will talk about some easy ideas for using your leftovers for some cheap and easy meals.
If you have a few spoonfuls of vegetables leftover, keep these frozen until you have enough for a soup or stew. Usually just some broth and a few herbs such as oregano and thyme is enough to make a tasty soup; a few jars of prepared gravy will make stew. These are very cheap easy meals that you can make with just about any leftover vegetables. If you have some leftover meat you can add this in as well and suddenly you have not just vegetable soup or stew but chicken or beef soup.Filling people up may be a concern with these cheap and easy meals but you can always make some cornbread or other bread to help make the meal more hearty.
You can also use that leftover meat for Low Cost Cooking meals if you slice it and cook it in a little oil. Chicken or beef cooked this way makes a great addition to any salad, or you can add a few more ingredients to make a great rolled up sandwich.Sometimes yuu can take those hamburgers you cooked last night and add some taco seasoning to make some tacos or burritos. These are also cheap easy meals that are easy to prepare and that make great use of meat that you might otherwise throw away.
The real key to using leftovers for Low Price Cooking meals is thinking of how you can dress them up or put them in new recipes so that they're tasty and palatable, as opposed to thinking that you should just pop them in the microwave. One thing that will really cut your budget is the fact that you can be creative with the food that you already have in your fridge and make it cheap and easy from items you already bought.

Making Cheap and Easy Meals Isn't That Complicated!
It might be true that one reason many people have a hard time making cheap and easy meals is that they think they're somewhat complicated and take a lot of planning, coupon clipping, and so forth. No one wants to spend their precious Saturday afternoon clipping coupons and studying store circulars, but of course the more cheap and easy meals you can incorporate into your weekly planning, the more money you're going to save overall - which means more money to pay for gas, your car, your mortgage, and so on. But planning for and preparing Budget Cooking meals isn't as complicated as many people would assume, if you know just a few simple tricks and tips that can help.
You do need to involve some planning for your Budget Cooking ; obviously a big cost of many food items is when you don't plan your meals and wind up grabbing something from a vending machine or opting for items that are already prepared for you. Even a cooked chicken from the supermarket's deli section is going to be about half over again what it costs to get a raw chicken and cook it yourself. This is true of so many items, so cheap and easy meals will mean putting forth a bit of effort to plan your meals. You might not need to actually write things down but you do need to give it some thought before mealtime, not after!
It also involves realizing how you can make substitutes for many expensive ingredients and items for your food. Bulk up on vegetables so that you need less meat in any dish; when you have soup or stew, add more veggies than you normally would so that you can use less meat. For other cheap and easy meals just steam a variety of vegetables and fill up on those so you eat less meat.Serve them over noodles and then you can do something different and try them in a stir fry.Sometimes just making the switch to frozen veggies can make your meals much more nutritious and also a lot less expensive.
You can also make Low Price Cooking with vegetables and less expensive items by learning what veggies and other items can be substituted for meat altogether. For instance stuffed peppers are usually very filling and only cost a few dollars per serving. Large mushrooms can also do the trick.Sometimes if you just make chili without the mean and add extra veggies it can still be just as good but a lot less expensive. These are just a few examples of cheap and easy meals you can make without any type of meat at all.
It does take some thought and effort but usually it's worth it when you consider your cost savings. And if you put that thought and effort into planning for these cheap and easy meals you might find that they're just as tasty if not even more so than your other standard fare!

Gourmet Coffee
Finding that perfect cup of gourmet coffee amongst the myriad of brands available can be a tedious task. The flavor is contingent upon many factors. They type of bean and where it is grown, the way it is shipped and packaged, how fine the grind and finally brewing method.
Cappuccino and espresso are two of the most well-loved gourmet coffees, and flavored coffees are always popular as well. When it comes to finer gourmet foods, gourmet coffees definitely rank up there and taste great when you add flavors to them such as Irish cream, vanilla, and caramel.
Chocolate the Grand Finale
Nothing is makes a better accompaniment to coffee or a better finish to a dinner of finer gourmet foods than gourmet chocolate.

Tips for Cooking Healthy and Light
With the oversized portions that restaurants serve up nowadays, North Americans have become accustomed to consuming hefty quantities of food on a daily basis. This is no problem if they are eating meals that are low in calories and generally nutritious. Regrettably, this isn't always the way it goes. That's how come it's crucial that when you do dine at home, you choose nutritious and low-cal foods as frequently as you can to offset the damage from other sources. It all starts with cooking light.
Light, healthy cooking relies on more than the ingredients you use; the oil you cook them with is also important. Indeed, the oil can alter the nutritional value of the dish considerably. Even though all your ingredients may be healthful, for example, veggies, lean meats and whole grains, if you add oil containing unhealthy fats, you'll wind up having a meal that's not so good for you.
Here are a few techniques to see to it that the meals you prepare for your household are light and healthy.
1. Choose Vegetable Oils
This is the most essential guideline to follow. Choose oil that's vegetable based to guarantee that what you're cooking your food with doesn't have a negative effect on your health. These oils contribute to raising the levels of good cholesterol in your system. They help to improve the performance of your cardiovascular system and compensate for the unhealthy cholesterol found in meat and animal fats.
2. Avoid Chemicals
As much as you can, stay away from seasonings and ingredients that aren't natural. It can turn a healthy meal into a questionable one. Your food might taste better with artificial flavoring but you might also end up with liver or kidney troubles because of the high sodium content. As well, stay away from batter mixes for deep fried foods; they just increase the calories without any nutritional benefits.
3. Reduce Meat
Make a practice of choosing vegetables and seafood for your home cooking. Restrict meat consumption to a serving or less per day. So you'll be getting the protein your body needs but avoiding the saturated fats contained in meat. On the occasions when you do indulge in a piece of meat, look for ones that are lower in saturated fats. White meats such as chicken and turkey are regarded as better for you than red meats such as beef and pork. Among these two choices, your best bet is pork since it's easier to trim the fat.
4. Cook Less
Another approach to healthy cooking is to make light meals, not just in terms of calories and fat, but also in quantity. This is particularly relevant when you're cooking the main meal of the day. However, make this change slowly. Extreme shifts in your eating habits can contribute to health issues.
It's also not recommended if you have young children. It's important that you give children all the nutrition they need to become strong and healthy. This doesn't mean overeating, but you shouldn't control their calories unless your doctor gives the ok.
Good Knives Are A Basic Need For Every Kitchen
A kitchen needs utensils, and there's such a wide variety available it will boggle your mind. Just look in any kitchen store or in the aisles of kitchenware at other retail stores and you’ll see an amazing array of items used for cooking. It you can only use a kitchen utensil for one specific task, sometimes it doesn't get used very often. However, there are other utensils that are more versatile, and needed and used daily.
Knives Are The Kitchen Workhorse
If you do much cooking at all, you’ll use not one, but several kinds of knives. Each of these kitchen utensils has a specific function, like chopping, slicing, or filleting food.
However, all knives are constructed with pretty much the same parts.
The Main Part Of The Knife - The Blade
The blade is pretty self-explanatory, being the metal part of the knife used for cutting, from the handle to the tip. It’s the most important part of the knife, and the quality of the blade determines how well the knife cuts. Good quality blades make it much easy to do food preparation for cooking.
A Better Bolster
The bolster is the small part between the blade and the handle, connecting the two together. To keep the blade securely attached to the handle is the bolster's main job.
However, it's also worth noting that there is an advantage to having a bolster that is not the full width of the end of the blade. That might seem sturdier, but it gets in the way of sharpening the blade. For that reason, it's preferable that the bolster doesn't reach clear to the edge of the blade.
The Whole Tang
The tang is an extension of the blade. Running through the middle of the handle, the tang not only provides a way to attach the handle, but helps give the knife good balance. It makes a knife more durable to have the tany running into the handle.
Sometimes the tang only goes partway into the handle. They are of varying lengths. A well constructed knife has a tang that runs the full length of the handle, making it strong and well-balanced.
Getting A Handle
You need a way to safely hold a knife, and that’s the handle. The handle encases the tang, holding it securely. A handle can be composed of a variety of plastics, or made of metal or wood.
A handle should not only be sturdy, it should be easy to hold. Since you use a knife a good bit in the kitchen, it's much better if it's a good fit to your hand.
Checking the different parts of the knife for quality gives you an idea what to look for when buying a good knife. There's a wide variety of knife types available however. Some of these include:
· Boning Knife
· Butter Knife
· Cheese Knife
· Chef’s Knife
· Cleaver
· Deli Knife
· Filet Knife
· Frozen Food Knife
· Mincing Knife
· Paring Knife
· Sandwich Knife
· Serrated Knife
· Slicing-Carving Knife
· Steak
· Utility
There are also specialty knives for chestnuts, clams, grapefruits, deveining, lettuce and oysters, plus specialty knives for different types of cuisines such as Japanese and Asian.
Fortunately, you don't need to buy every kind of knife availalbe.
The Bare Essentials of Knives For The Kitchen
While every knife has a use, most people don’t need so many of the more specialized knives. There are some kinds of knives, however, that should be in everyone's kitchen. Knives that can handle more than one task, and are able to do many types of food preparation are a must.
The Paring Knife
If you don’t have any other knife, you need a paring knife. It's a smaller type of knife, possessing a straight blade with a sharp edge. Paring knives run from about three to five inches long with a thin blade that tapers to a point at the tip.
This little knife is easy to handle and use. This name is named for its main function, paring foods. It’s also good for cutting up small items, coring apples and such, and mincing garlic and other foods. A good paring knife should be in every kitchen.
A Knife For A Chef
The Chef’s or Cook’s knife is another versatile knife. The chef's knife come in several different lengths, from 6 inches to 12 inches long. The smaller sized chef knives are called mini chef’s knives. These knives are especially good for people with smaller hands. The bigger chef knife is a good fit for people with bigger hands, allowing the knife to balance well in their hand.
The chef knife picks up where the paring knife leaves off, and can cut bigger vegetables, fruits and meats. It works well for chopping, mincing and slicing foods. The bigger size makes it better suited for the heavy duty work, and making thicker slices than a paring knife.
The Serrated Knife
Instead of a straight edge like the paring and chef knives have, the serrated knife has notches in the blade. It can be anywhere from 5 to 10 inches long. A serrated knife works well for foods that are hard on the outside, while being soft on the inside. One of the best examples is a loaf of homemade bread. The serrated blade is also good for slicing tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables.
Put A Cleaver To Good Use
You could make do with a paring knife, chef’s knife and serrated knife, but there’s one other blade that is highly useful in the kitchen. This knife had a very wide blade which is usually about 6 inches in length.
Like other knives, a cleaver can be used to chop and shred foods, but it is also good for pounding and crushing foods. Additionally, the cleaver is a good knife for cutting through hard materials such as chicken bones.
Not only can a cleaver pulverize meat, but the flat of the blade can be used to crush garlic and other herbs. The cleaver is a good sized knife. It would take up a lot of space in a kitchen drawer. To help with that problem, most cleavers come with a hole near the end of the blade so it can be hung up somewhere out of the way.
Choose Good Quality Knives For The Kitchen
Whatever knives you chose, get the best quality you can. A kitchen knife will be used almost every day, do do yourself a favor and buy good ones. It will make meal preparation just that much easier.
The more you cook, the more you will appreciate using good quality knives, and may wish to expand your selection to include more types. When just getting started, however, the chef's knife, paring knife, serrated knife and cleaver make a good basic set of knives.
Every kitchen can use a few good knives.

Three Easy Steps to the Perfect BBQ
The only true BBQ for a purist is achieved through slow cooking. This generally means using either a smoker or a grill with a large surface and a snug lid. The idea is to keep the food at some distance away from the direct heat. You can do this by rearranging the briquettes, or by having a flame on only one side of the grill. This produces a section of low heat that lets you implement the first of three steps to a perfect BBQ: infusing.
With infusing, your objective is to get all of the flavorful ingredients into the meat before the surface layer is cooked sufficiently to seal the inside. The rub, sauce, fat and juices mix with the smoke and heat to produce a complex interaction inside the meat. Both surface and interior fats melt away and the particles become part of the external layer. Now the stage is set for the movement of the flavor compounds. Some killer BBQ is right around the corner.
During the second step, the actuall cooking happens, and this usually takes a while. While the inside temperature of the meat increases, the proteins break down and convert to amino acids. Sugars change their composition and spread their sweetness. Salt gets ionized and enzymes speed up. The outcome of all this chemical activity is the transformation of a hunk of meat into a savory main course.
If you've added any wood to the fire, it will impart a smokey flavor to the meat during this stage. The surface of the meat becomes sealed and the inside juices are trapped; as they heat up they alter their composition. The meat will spend most of its cooking time in this phase. The temperature has to be lower than what you'd use indoors to cook.
After the interior temperature of the meat gets to 200F, it's ready to be taken off the smoker or BBQ grill.
The third step is where your meat completes the cooking process. As it cools, the internal heat is still high enough to continue to affect the meat. Throughout this stage, meat can become even more tender, creating a most satisfying meal.
You can serve it once the temperature decreases to 165F or lower. Cut off a small piece and check the color. If you're cooking beef, it should be dark red; chicken needs to be white, and its juices should be clear. If it's pork, it should be white with a gray tinge. The taste should be subtle and it should have an easy to chew consistency.
And voila, the perfect BBQ.

Find Out How Top Chefs Choose their Cooking Equipment
Would you expect the top chefs to use low or high quality cooking equipment? My bet is you answered 'high' quality. And you'd be right. The faces of well-known TV chefs are often enough to sell the brand of cooking equipment bearing their name. Jamie Oliver springs to mind straight away. And you wouldn't be far off the mark in thinking that Jamie's own brand of cooking equipment is top quality.
His cooking equipment has to be of the highest quality. He is a brand. He sells his shows, his recipes, his cooking style through the quality of what he produces. So the quality of his cooking equipment has to match the quality of the rest of his brand. Chances are, you wouldn't think much of your Jamie Oliver deep frying pan if the handle came off while you were following Jamie's show, frying up the perfect English breakfast.
OK, so much for celebrity chefs. They make their living from chopping up, mixing and cooking food, so they are only going to use the best cooking equipment. How about the rest of us? Is it possible to detect a real difference between the cheap cooking equipment and the premium brands? Does the law of diminishing returns apply to kitchenware?
The short answer is: cook a lot? Then buy the best. Good cooking equipment lasts a lifetime. It's something you forge a relationship with. Your tools are your cooking pots. They can become an extension of your body, even of your self. you. It is a heavy piece of equipment. It's solid. You really feel it's power every time you wield it. And there's research to suggest that cooking slightly acidic foods such as tomatoes in ironware will have a beneficial effect on your health. Contributing to your daily iron intake, traces of iron are released into your food.
On the other hand, cheap cooking equipment is very likely to let you down.

What can a Gourmet Cooking Class do for You?
Summer is drawing to a close. All across the country, people like you are considering taking part in a course this fall. Either you want to add something tasty to your cv. Or you simply want to get out a bit more and meet some new people. Whatever your motivation, a gourmet cooking class could be exactly what you were looking for.
Gourmet food is more than just filling a yawning belly. It satisfies more than just hunger. It is the cooking equivalent to art. If Ronald McDonald were a house painter, gourmet cooking would be Vincent Van Gogh.
Professional gourmet chefs can command decent salaries. And though they work under pressure, often doing unsociable hours, the rewards can be high. You have the chance to make a mark in your local community. You can earn a certain notoriety - good restaurants get attention. They are written about in blogs and the press. Famous people, or at least well-known locals, will show up if the reviews are good. You could move into becoming a restauranteur, running your own business, perhaps even owning a chain of restaurants.
But there's one requirement; one thing you absolutely must have. A passion for cooking.
You have to feel the intoxication of great ingredients. You have to swoon at the sight of a well-stocked fish stall moments after the dawn fishermen have landed their catch. You have to catch your breath at the sight of a beautifully presented dish. And you have to want to go through everything it takes to be able to to that yourself.
Even if your ambitions don't reach so high, you'll still get a lot out of a gourmet cooking course. The emphasis will be on quality over quantity - and with over 35% of the US population declared officially obese, that can't be a bad thing.
You'll learn how to present food to have your dinner guests reaching for their cameras. Your meals will become sensuous experiences shared with a chosen few of friends and loved ones. But most of all, your moments in the kitchen will be transformed into stimulating explorations, assaults on the senses that make life so worth living.
In short, attend a gourmet cooking class, and you won't just be enriching your diet. You could be spicing up your life.

Good quality Japanese knives are able to last for many years
Typically wedding presents are given with the objective of allowing the young couple to achieve domestic self-sufficiency. As a consequence, few individuals look beyond big department gift registries for something truly special.
Department store knife sets and knives (in German: Küchenmesser) are a popular wedding gift, despite the fact that they are very low quality. Great chefs have known about the importance of high quality tools for a long time. Now, because of the availability of high-quality knives from Japan, the home chef can have the same high quality tool as the professional chef.
Traditional wedding gifts are becoming quite boring for many newly wed couples. Chefs have known for a long time that longer-lasting equipment is a product of better quality material and finer techniques -- and a recent revolution of excellent quality Japanese chef's knives, high quality is now easily attainable for both amateurs and professionals.
Whether you are a young married couple learning to cook together, or just someone who relishes cooking (in German: kochen), using quality knives can make a quality difference. Unlike cheap knives made from stamped metal, the high quality knives preferred by Japanese chefs have a better balance and superior edge retention capacity as they are forged from finest carbon steel. Top awards continue to be amassed by Japanese brands like Hattori, Shun, and Global as well as receives the ardent approval of home-based amateur chefs and professional chefs as well.
These high-quality knives, e.g. Japanese Haiku Messer Knives, will last longer than mediocre knives and serve the couple for their entire married life. In addition to being reknowned for their beauty, Japanese knives are of extremely high quality which lends itself to their durability as well as reliability in the kitchen.
Most wedding gifts are of the functional variety, including kitchen appliances, glassware, and silverware that a new couple needs when starting a home. On the other hand, Japanese chef's knives are extremely good looking and pleasing to the hand; the quality is so good that it could even be considered passing onto the heirs the next generation or even as a wedding gift from parents.

Don't let your Cooking Pots Endanger your Family's Health
Certain materials are more inert than others. This means the pots you use to cook with can interact with the food you make. Traces of metals can make their way into your food.
This is not so important for adults. For babies and small children it can be a risk to health. Experts are divided on exactly what the effects are. The biggest risks are attached to those who are allergic to certain metals. And babies can't always tell you what has given them a stomachache or that unsightly rash.
When your cooking pots are shiny and new, there is no risk. As soon as they begin to get chipped, the metals they are made of can get into your food. Here are some tips from the experts to help you avoid any health risks:
- Avoid using copper pots that are not lined or insulated to prepare your baby's food. Copper can break down folic acid and vitamins C and E once it is heated to a high enough temperature. Any food that contains vinegar is likely to be quite acidic. Acidic foods break down the copper in your pots - and this is deposited in your food.
- Tiny amounts of aluminium can get into your baby's food if you heat up something acidic in an aluminium pot. A safer alternative is anodized aluminium cookware which prevents any aluminium getting into your food.
- Stainless steel pots are fairly inert and won't react with food even though they are made of a variety of metals. But you'd be better off not using them to prepare baby food if the pots are old - especially if they are dented or chipped.
The non-stick material coating non-stick pans can chip off into the food you're preparing, so you should avoid using them to prepare your baby's food. Many experts agree that noxious gases are released when a non-stick pan is heated to high temperatures.
In general, scrubbing your stainless steel cookware with an abrasive substance such as wire wool is not a great idea. It scratches your pots, releasing tiny quantities of chromium and nickel into your food.
However, the news is not all bad. Cooking with iron cooking pots can benefit your health. When you cook acidic foods such as tomatoes in iron, the foods actually "pull" the iron from the pot. This increases the amount of iron, essential to replenishing blood cells, in your food.
The FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition say that ceramic, glass and enameled cookware is safe. They recommend not using older enameled cookware because it may contain cadmium. Cadmium is toxic and is no longer used in the manufacture of cookware in the US.
